An Afternoon in Full Bloom: The Tulipán Tulip Festival at the NYBG

May 3, 2025

At the height of tulip season, the beauty of spring was in full bloom as our growing community came together for an unforgettable celebration of Hungarian heritage at the New York Botanical Garden. Hosted by the Tulipán Foundation, this special gathering offered an exclusive opportunity to experience NYBG’s vibrant tulip displays through a private guided tour, followed by a luncheon and lecture at the historic Stone Mill.

At the heart of the event was, of course, the tulip—a symbol deeply embedded in Hungarian art and culture, and the namesake of the Tulipán Foundation. Fittingly, the afternoon began with a warm welcome from NYBG staff, who introduced guests to the tulip’s global journey and enduring significance. Their insights set the tone for a highly-anticipated tour through the Garden’s stunning tulip beds—each bursting with color and accompanied by stories about their significance throughout history.

As the group arrived at the luncheon, they were greeted by the sounds of live Hungarian folk music, setting a festive tone for the afternoon. Making their way to the tables, guests encountered displays of handcrafted works by Tulipán grantees, each adorned with the iconic tulip motif. These pieces, seamlessly woven into the décor, celebrated the flower’s enduring role in Hungarian craftsmanship and honored the artists keeping these traditions alive.

Following the meal, Dr. Ágnes Fülemile, an esteemed ethnographer and senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities, took the stage for a captivating lecture. She traced the tulip’s journey from its Eastern origins to its enduring role in Hungarian decorative arts, particularly in textile art such as embroidery, as well as in ceramics, woodcarving, and painted furniture, highlighting its deep-rooted presence in Hungarian folklore. A short Q&A followed, allowing guests to engage further with Dr. Fülemile’s expertise.

As the event came to a close, the folk band began playing once more, creating a joyful atmosphere as everyone said their goodbyes. The private tram soon returned to escort guests back through the Garden, where they were invited to continue exploring NYBG’s springtime blooms at their leisure.

From start to finish, the Tulipán Tulip Festival was an unforgettable afternoon that brought Hungarian culture to life in one of New York City’s most extraordinary settings. The tulip served as a powerful symbol throughout the event, representing the Tulipán Foundation's commitment to cultivating and nurturing Hungarian culture, ensuring our traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
